KCM Trade recently hosted Trading 101 classes for the Melbourne University Cantonese Students Association (CSA) and the Monash University Hong Kong Student Association (HKSA) on March 15th and March 21st, respectively. Led by experienced speakers Jason Lau and Tim Waterer, the classes aimed to introduce trading basics to about 20 participants.
At the Melbourne University session, students delved into the fundamental distinctions between trading and investing. They learned that trading involves short-term buying and selling to capitalize on market fluctuations, while investing typically adopts a longer-term approach aimed at wealth accumulation over time. Through engaging discussions, students were introduced to how investment decisions are made and were provided with live examples to illustrate key concepts.
Moving to the Monash University class on March 21st, students explored the current key themes influencing financial markets. Conversations revolved around factors like interest rates, inflation, growth outlook, and geopolitical events, all of which significantly shaped market trends. Moreover, students were introduced to popular trading instruments such as forex, shares, commodities, and indices.
The classes also delved into the methodologies of fundamental and technical analyses. Fundamental analysis covered macroeconomic indicators like GDP growth, job data, inflation rates, and PMI data, which can impact market movements. Technical analysis tools such as pivot points, moving averages, and the relative strength index were also covered, offering students insights into analyzing price movements and trends.
Moreover, common trading strategies like news trading, swing trading, day trading, and trend trading were discussed, each with its own set of advantages and risks. Emphasis was placed on the importance of risk management, with discussions on techniques like stop-loss and take-profit orders to mitigate losses and maximize gains.
Both classes featured engaging Q&A sessions where students had the opportunity to clarify doubts and deepen their understanding of trading concepts.
By the end of the Trading 101 classes, students had gained a better understanding of trading and investing principles, equipping them to navigate financial markets effectively. The events also fostered interest and confidence in financial literacy among university students. KCM Trade's initiative, coupled with enthusiastic student participation, paved the way for future collaborations and educational endeavors in finance.
